Although the term “supercar” has existed for more than a century, the modern notion of this category of ultra-high-performance vehicles was popularized in the late 1960s, when stunning automotive marvels such as the Lamborghini Miura and the Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale proved themselves more capable and viscerally desirable than the vast majority of roadgoing cars that had come before. For the next several decades, the supercar moniker was applied to a rarified group of automobiles with remarkable performance and alluring, often-audacious designs.

In 2005 the Bugatti Veyron debuted, and with its four-digit horsepower, top speed surpassing 250 mph, low production numbers, and seven-figure price tag, suddenly “supercar” didn’t seem superlative enough—the “hypercar” was born. The cars on which this title has been bestowed possess exotic looks, extreme specifications, bespoke luxury, supreme exclusivity, and truly exceptional performance.
